Clark County School District Police Officer James Harris
CCSDPD K-9 Marley, who was 5, died on Nov. 14, 2024, after Harris left him unattended in a vehicle for more than six hours while he worked at a high school, according to court documents.
Harris told investigators he “shut the air off for the passenger compartment” but left “the air on in the rear for K-9 Marley,” documents said. He intentionally disconnected a heat sensor that automatically rolls down windows, turns on a fan, and sets off an alarm if the temperature gets too warm inside for an animal. Harris admitted that he never checked on Marley for the entire 6 hours that he was locked inside the hot vehicle. Marley had no food or water.
Harris plead 'no contest' in Novermber 2025, just a week before he was to head to a bench trial. He was found guilty of 1 misdemeanor count of Confine animal in motor vehicle. Other charges of torturing or abandoning an animal and failure to provide for a confined animal were dismissed. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Harris' actions, while negligent, did not rise to the malicious level necessary to file felony charges.
On November 4, 2025, Officer Harris was added to the Nevada Animal Abuse Registry
It is unclear if Harris remains with the CCSD Police Department.

A Tragedy That
Sparked a Movement
In the heat of a Las Vegas summer in 2024, a bulldog named Reba was left for dead inside a sealed container; an unspeakable act of cruelty that shook our community to its core. Her death was not only tragic; it was preventable. Out of this heartbreak rose a spark: the fight for Reba’s Law (AB381). Named in her honor, the bill aimed to finally enforce meaningful consequences for those who abuse or abandon animals.
